To the best of my knowledge, the Crown Prince title has never applied to France -- correct? Rather, a direct heir to the kingdom was designated as the DAUPHIN -- assuming there was only one. But if there were two direct heirs, the older was the Grand Dauphin while the younger was the Petit Dauphin -- correct?
If one of them predeceased the sovereign, however, did the other one simply become THE Dauphin? I believe that the "Sun" King Louis XIV was predeceased by THREE direct heirs, which meant that the succession skipped a couple of generations. As it was, his eventual successor was a great-grandson -- the second son of the eldest son of his eldest son.
Actually the third son of the eldest son of his eldest son.
