Yes, Pedro served, like Luis Alfonso, because the military service was mandatory then. But since it ceased to be, I cannot remember any close relative who has served. I think Jaime, Pedro’s son, entered the naval academy, but he left it.
Some years ago, the then-Spanish defense minister commented that it was expected that Leonor, as heir to the throne, will receive military training just like her father and grandfather. Meanwhile, Leonor has four male cousins on the Borbon side who are now young adults or soon to be.
My question is—does Froilán or any of the Urdangarrin boys have any plans of doing a stint in the military? Also, is military service still considered an honorable tradition within the Spanish aristocracy, or simply just a waste of time? Did any of Pilar or Margarita’s sons serve? I know that military service used to be obligatory for Spanish men, but AFAIK, only Felipe and his cousin Pedro actually served.
