Apparently Dom Luiz is not a believer in the theory that the Crown should be above party politics, but, of course, the family is not reigning.
Dom Luiz did not support any political party in his statement. In fact he specifically stated, "Assuming always a nonpartisan attitude, the Imperial Family has always stood out for its spirit of conciliation, manifesting great capacity of dialog with the Brazilians of the most diverse currents. However, such nonpartisan stance never prevented the members of the Imperial Family from evaluating the problems of State and the concrete circumstances of the Country in the light of ideas, principles and doctrines. It is enough for me to recall here the continuous commitment to the abolition of slavery. It is for these reasons that, as the Head of the Imperial Household, I feel impelled, in response to the appeal of those who constitute a strong monarchist current, to utter a word of guidance at the present historical crossroads."
