José, Dona Leopoldina was the scholar of the family, a great number of objects that belogs to the royal family come from expedictions in her name. the photos today in our newspapers are devastating. much of important objects are lost including the most ancient human fossil in America. Thanks to the staf some objects were saved. Brazilian culture is sad today.
A devastating fire destroyed yesterday one of Rio's largest museums - Brazil National Museum.
The building was ordered by king D.João VI who lived there with the Imperial family while the PRF lived in Rio.
The fire broke shortly after the museum closed to the public, curiously on the very date Brazil celebrated its day of independence.
Among the pieces that were lost were a meteor, the oldest human fossil found in South America, the most important brazilian-indian collectio and one of the most important brazilian antroplogy libraries.
It stroke me that among the losses was Emperor D.Pedro I private collection of egyptian artefacts, that he donated to the country.
D.Pedro was not exactly a scholar and I have never read of his interest in egyptian art.
