In some of the many well-deserved tributes I heard today to the late great fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, I heard that he was of noble birth. I did a little bit of online research and found that he was a count and his father was a marquis. I could only find information going back a couple of generations, though.
Could anyone share the origin of the title and whether he leaves any collateral relatives who carry it on?
And I've never been entirely clear on French noble titles: If his father was a marquis but he was a count, does that mean he had an older brother who inherited the marquisate? If he had had children, would they have carried any title beyond the "de" predicate? Thank you.
