I believe Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, will be the first British King to descend from the Catholic Monarchs. This will be through his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana descends from King Charles II of Great Britain, whose maternal Grandmother, Marie de' Medici, was a direct descendant of the Catholic Monarchs.
: Maria Luisa of Bourbon Parma and first wife of
: Ferdinand of Bulgaria was like her husband a
: descendant of the Catholic Kings. Both
: descent from Anna of Austria. The
: Bourbon-Parma's also descent from her niece
: and daughter in law Maria Teresa of Spain.
: The Savoys descent in a direct male line
: from the Infante Catharina Michaela,
: daughter of Felipe iI and his third wife
: Elisabeth of Valois.
: No doubt there are other lines going back to
: the Catholic Kings but those are the ones
: that spring to my mind.

: Can anyone name me good examples of
: royal descendants of King Ferdinand of
: Aragon and Queen Isabel of Castile? I've
: been trying to rack my brains in thinking of
: the possible genealogical connections for
: this ... That all Protestant royals today
: descend (generally speaking) from distant
: Catholic ancestors is a given: after all,
: the Reformation began in Western Europe,
: which until 1500 was all Catholic.
: As for Catholic royals descended from
: Protestants: given the traditionally strict
: emphasis on equal marriages, religion was
: something that European royals somehow
: managed to bend around, through conversions
: or dispensations. Indeed, had the late King
: Michael of Romania simply been willing to
: promise to raise all his prospective
: children in the Catholic faith, then he and
: Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma could easily
: have been granted a dispensation to marry,
: by Pope Pius XII.
: The marriages of Princess Henrietta of
: Nassau-Weilburg and Duchess Maria Dorothea
: of Wuerttemberg
: (great-great-granddaughters of King George
: II of Great Britain) to Habsburg archdukes
: (sons of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II), as
: well as the union of Princess Therese of
: Saxe-Hildburghausen and the prospective King
: Ludwig I of Bavaria, had important
: consequences in producing genealogical links
: between Catholic and Protestant royals.
: But the opposite is trickier --
: specifically, Protestant royals who
: potentially descend from Ferdinand and
: Isabel. Was Princess Mafalda of Italy (a
: daughter of King Vittorio Emmanuele III)
: possibly a descendant of the Catholic
: Majesties of Spain? If so, then her
: descendants might count, since I believe her
: children by the Protestant Prince Philipp of
: Hesse were raised in their father's faith.
: I know that neither child born to her
: sister, Princess Giovanna (who became Queen
: of the Bulgarians) was raised Catholic. In
: fact, her niece (Princess Marie Louise of
: Bulgaria, raised Orthodox) married a
: Protestant (a prince of Leiningen) and had
: children raised in the faith. The question
: is: was their father (the said Italian king)
: descended from Ferdinand and Isabel?
: Any other potential examples?
