well yes, legally he was King, but the act of anointing is a religious ceremony that cannot be undone. Dutch sovereigns are not anointed. If Edward had been crowned and then faced the abdication crisis, it would have been a very different issue. I am not at sure that he could have been downgraded to a royal duke.
