When King D.João VI died, Emperor D.Pedro I of Brazil abdicated the portuguese crown on his daughter D.Maria da Glória, knowing that the merge of the two crowns was impossible.

Later, he abdicated the brazilian crown in favour of his infant son, D.Pedro II.
The official reason was that he wanted to help regain the portuguese throne for D.Maria, but the truth is that the brazilian polititians wanted to get rid of him.
