He was the last reigning Greek monarch of the House of Glücksberg. The dynasty lasted 110 years from 1863 when his great-grandfather George I became King of Greece until 1973 when Constantine II was deposed as a result of the end of the monarchy which was largely caused by his collaboration with the illegal Colonels Regime. His own reign had lasted just 9 years.
