On occasion in this site, I've noticed Bavarian royals being mentioned as "of Bavaria" or even as "in Bavaria". What is the significance of this, if any?
Every member of the House of Wittelsbach had the title Duke in/of Bavaria (both prepositions were used but ‘of’ is more common in English).
By the time Bavaria became a kingdom, there were only two lines of Bavarian dukes: the Counts Palatine of Zweibrücken and the Counts Palatine of Gelnhausen.
The Zweibrücken branch became the kings and princes of Bavaria; the Gelnhausen branch were made Royal Highnesses with the principal title of Duke *in* Bavaria because Bavaria was no longer a duchy. They did, however, follow the princes of Bavaria in succession to the kingdom.
