With sincere apprehension, I am following the evolution of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine hour by hour, which has resulted in a real war that is already killing thousands.
The madness of dictator Vladimir Putin, with the war he wanted which is firmly condemned in all its forms, is destroying not only Ukraine but is bringing Russia itself and its glorious people into the abyss, who cannot and must not accept impassively these nefarious actions.
The sanctions will hurt Russia, but I believe that today they are a just and necessary step to make people feel that the world of civilized countries is united against a unilateral declaration of war, moved by those who seem not to have at heart the precious good of the freedom of a people, today attacked, offended and wounded.
Diplomacy has been overwhelmed by the arrogance of arms and in the face of all this we cannot but stand by the side of a suffering people.
The words of the Holy Father are for us believers and non-believers, a beacon in this crazy night of danger that has assailed Ukraine: "the world should be preserved from the madness of war" because it can never be a solution to the failure of politics, war is the defeat of us all.
I thank His Holiness Pope Francis with infinite devotion for every diplomatic attempt that I know I have made in these hours with all the international actors involved and in a strong and decisive way towards the Kremlin.
I follow with anxiety and concern the actions and the fate of the very courageous President Volodymyr Zelensky, who with valor and authority is leading his people in first person by standing by his side, ready for the extreme sacrifice.
I pray for peace, but I cannot and we cannot just stand still and watch: for this reason my father and I have given precise instructions for the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy to immediately mobilize with a fundraiser to help those who are affected by war.
May the supreme good of peace be relentlessly pursued.
May God protect Ukraine.
