Andreas and Alice were quite well related.
He the son and younger brother of the King of the Hellenes
A Russian Grand Duchess was his mother and the Kings of Denmark, Norway and the UK as well as the Tsar were his first cousins.
His wife was also well connected. Her mother a sister of the Tsarina, a Russian Grand Duchess, the sister-in-law of the German Emperor and their brother the Grand Duke of Hasse-Darmstadt.
Victoria of Battenberg was a granddaughter of Victoria making her one of the best connected people through her cousins.
So the connections of Andrew and Alice were good, but no real line to Portugal. They also only had daughters but that was not a particular issue as there had been two reigning Queens in Portugal.
Still why a Greek and Danish prince was suggested i don't know. On the other hand Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha had no ties to Belgium neither did Wilhelm of Denmark to Greece so that was not a major issue.
I am curious who thought of him and what countries supported him.
On Feb 1st 1908, king D.Carlos of Portugal and Crown Prince D.Luis Filipe were shot in Lisbon in a terrorist regicide.
This was in fact the end of the portuguese monarchy, as, two and and a half years later, D.Carlos' younger son, the unprepared and vain D.Manuel II, lost his throne after a reign that was a footnote in the history books.
You must be wondering why I am posting this here and not at the Franco Iberian MB.
A short time ago, I read that the powers (not sure which) suggested Pr.Andrew of Greece to occupy the vacant portuguese throne.
That seemes to me the most extravagant idea.
Portugal had two candidates - the exiled king D.Manuel II and D.Miguel, the duke of Bragança.
Pr.Andrew was a total unknown person in Portugal and would not gather any support from the royalists already divided between the 2 Bragança cousins.
OK, the powers have imposed candidates in several Balkan countries (Roumania, Bulgaria and Greece) that were ignored from most of their populations.
My question is when exactly was Pr. Andrew's name suggested as a candidate for Portugal's throne ?
Before or after WW1 ?
Which countries supported him ?
It is interesting to remark the implications of his acceptance of the portuguese crown.
His only son, Philip, would be the crown-prince and heir to the throne and, should the monarchy have survived, Philip would not have been able to marry the british heiress.
