Is it true that he renounced his succession rights for himself and his descendants for marrying Princess Mafalda of Savoy -- obviously not because of any "unequal" birth (she being a daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele III of Italy) -- because of religion?
That he was a Lutheran, and she Catholic, is well-known. What I didn't know, until listening to a video on YouTube, was that they had agreed to raise all their prospective children in her faith. At the time (1925), this promise was a strict requirement of the Catholic Church, for a dispensation.
A useful site is Usefulcharts.com if interested- and they have a TouTube channel.
Who are the present-day heirs to the house, anyway? What exactly happened to the succession? It seems that this might count as another example of a marriage not dynastically approved, despite the unquestionable equality of the union.
