Whatever might be said about Spain or the UK, Bavaria was a kingdom whose throne was bound by the semi-Salic law of succession -- meaning that females were not in line to the throne (they could inherit only if there were no eligible males). Of course, most princesses left the country to marry foreign royals; but the house of Wittelsbach had a number of female members who remained unmarried.
How exactly did they rank at the royal court, in terms of protocol? Specifically, did they outrank the wives of princes, or was it the other way around? I've been wondering about the likes of Alexandra Amalie (youngest daughter of King Ludwig I) vs. her sisters-in-law; Therese (only daughter of Prince Luitpold); Clara (youngest daughter of Prince Adalbert); Pilar (only daughter of Prince Ludwig Ferdinand); and the unmarried daughters of the future King Ludwig III.
