Maria Theresia of Austria succeeded in in october 1740 and her son co-ruler and heir was born on march 13th 1741 so she was certainly pregnant when succeeding her father. Previous Message This may be an obscure question, but what women in royal history were pregnant at the times of their husbands' accessions to thrones as kings? I don't believe any queen REGNANT was pregnant when succeeding. I was just wondering about queens consort. Off the top of my head, two examples coming to mind: Princess Marie of Prussia (1825-1889), who was pregnant with her second child (the future King Otto of Bavaria) when in 1848 her husband unexpectedly came to the Bavarian throne as King Maximilian II, upon the forced abdication of his father, King Ludwig I; Princess Astrid of Sweden (1905-1935), who was pregnant with her third child (the future King Albert II of the Belgians) when in 1934 her husband unexpectedly came to the throne of Belgium as King Leopold III, upon the accidental death of his father, King Albert I. I can only imagine the implications of the situation for each woman -- having to make a major adjustment in undergoing one of the biggest transformations in her life. Being an expectant mother at the time of becoming an unexpected queen ... Are there any other examples? |
