When Nicholas II abdicated, was he told to do so? Who was involved then?
The Tsar abdicated during Februar Revolution of 1917 and the revolutionaries of the February Revolution have 'convinced' him to do so for himself and his then still minor son. The ultimate point for this first revolution of 1917 were measures of food rationing, but social and economic problems within Russian society many of them hardened after outbreak of WWI ultimately led to it.
Were there intentions to continue the monarchy?
No - after GD Michael denied to take over power from his brother, Russian monarchy ended.
Later the entire family of Nicholas II was murdered by the Bolsheviks in Yekaterinburg.

Above some links to Wikipedia about the February Revolution, the Abdication and Nicholas II himself.
But I actually recommend you to read one of the many books about this topic. The Guardian delivers a list of books for a broader understanding of the events that changed history up to this day: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/apr/12/top-10-books-about-the-russian-revolution-tariq-ali
