In an interview with Romanian media in June 2009, he stated that he had no interest in any claim to the Romanian throne.
Just as the Duke of Bavaria has no interest in any claim to the British throne ... but that doesn't change the legal fact that Karl Friedrich would be the rightful occupant of the hypothetical throne, under the 1923 constitution of Romania.
I know that there is not always a correlation between the legal/genealogical claim on a throne and the actual personal interest a would-be pretender has on it. It seems, then, that the Hohenzollerns don't care about the Romanian claim, than the Wittelsbachs about the Greek claim (as the heirs of King Otto).
By contrast, one does not see this kind of nonchalant attitude toward, say, the claim on Bourbon-Two Sicilies. THAT feud remains in the air, and has yet to be resolved -- relations between the two rival factions being extremely bitter, since the conflict erupted in 1960.
