I know that he was the *consolation prize* of Duchess Sophie Charlotte in Bavaria, the jilted fiancée of King Ludwig II (who kept getting cold feet about the prospective marriage, and postponing the wedding, until finally calling off the engagement altogether at the end of 1867; in an act of chivalry, however, he offered to renew their engagement, should she be unable to find herself another husband within a year). Just how was he (a grandson of King Louis-Philippe of the French) and his bride (a granddaughter of King Maximilian I of Bavaria) related, anyway? Both were Catholic royals, but they don't appear to have been too closely related. After all, his mother was Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Kohary), whose mother was a Hungarian noblewoman (not royal).
