In 1910 Portugal ended its monarchy and then both Italy and Greece did the same thing later in the century. At the end of WW I, several German monarchies ended their existence as well. Were the monarchs told that their reigns had ended and that they were to "git"? Did any of these monarchs remain in office until such time as a new regime took over?
...between 9 and 23 November. The King of Bavaria technically relieves all civil servants, etc, of their oaths of loyalty to him. Others may have done the same, I am not sure.
