Highness is above Serene Highness so he would mot have gone down and then back up. Previous Message
That's how Wikipedia presented it; but that page needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Ducal Serene Highness until 1844, at which point it was abandoned for the superior style of Highness.
Once again, Wikipedia states that it didn't happen until 1881; but then, perhaps it was only August's family which remaind DSH until then. After all, he was only a fringe member of the house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, being the second son of a second son. His older brother, of course, became the king consort of Portugal; and he himself married a daughter of King Louis-Philippe of the French. And his own children got elevated through marriage or the acquisition of crowns.
Perhaps the emperor saw fit to elevate August and his eldest son at that point, as they must have felt "left out" ... What about his second son, who in the 1864 married Princess Leopoldina of Brazil? Did you receive any Brazilian royal title or get elevated in his qualifying rank?
