It seems, then, that there is quite an extensive list of unused titles -- legal, but for some reason or another, not assumed by the parties. I posted about some queens who obviously had no reason to style themselves with the lower title of princess (e.g. Sophia Dorothea of Prussia, consort of King Friedrich Wilhelm I, who became a princess of the UK when her father succeeded to the British throne, thanks to the 1701 Act of Settlement; Queen Olga of Greece, who was legally also a princess of Denmark because her husband was a son of King Christian IX: Queen Amalie of Greece, who was legally also a princess of Bavaria, because her husband was a son of King Ludwig I).
