Just how exactly did succession work, under such a system? I understand that this characterized imperial Russia, long before inheritance laws evolved to what they would become in the good part of Europe (whatever might be said about other continents): hereditary by primogeniture, with the lateral having precedence over the collateral. Thus it was that in royal France, one occasionally had boy kings ascend the throne (e.g. Louis XIV and his great-grandson, Louis XV, both of the house of Bourbon).
