As an aside, the mother of King Zog I was never a queen but the National Assembly of Albania gave her the title of Queen Mother when her son acceded to the throne.
This only compounds the ambiguity in the definition of Queen Mother: to the best of my knowledge, it never applies to any woman who was never a queen. Yet, to many, it seems to suffice that she was the mother of a king.
But look what happened when the Duchess of Kent (1786-1861) tried to style herself with this title. Didn't her daughter Victoria, the new queen regnant of Great Britain in 1837, correct her by stating "No, mama, you're the queen's mother"?
Like I said, I'm OK now with referring to Marie of Bavaria as a queen mother -- since she met all the conditions to qualify as one. But not to her mother-in-law, since Therese was never the widow of a king.
The problem in all this, I realize, is that Queen Mother is not even a formal title denoting an official position. Perhaps that's why some have chosen to expand its use. I believe Thailand also gave this title to the mother of King Bhumidol ...
