No one can argue the Duchess was ever Queen. Paola and Sofia are queens, and are mothers of their husbands’ successors. I don’t think anyone suggested expanding the definition to all mothers of kings and queens regnant.
Jane was referring to the fact that Helen of Roumania was never queen of Roumania de facto and yet was titled as Queen-Mother.
By the time Carol II became king, they were already divorced.
The Dk of Kent never managed to be King.
The Countess of Flanders, Marie von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, lived to see her son Albert become King in Belgium.
Don't think anyone ever called her Reine-Mère (or the equivalent in flemish).
Astrid was a brief Queen, and Lilian never a Queen.
Was Elisabeth just the Queen, until the arrival of Fabiola, or was she Queen-Mother during her son's reign ?
Don't believe there is a Queen-grand-mother...
