Mary and Elizabeth

If the current Queen had chosen to reign as Mary III, there would have been two Queen Mary, since her grand mother was still alive.
There would definitely have been a severe case of name crowding, thereby placing either the young new queen regnant's mother or grandmother in a hole -- or "on the spot" (a popular American expression).
Had she chosen to reign as Mary III, then her grandmother would have been forced to style herself as HM Mary, Dowager Queen of the United Kingdom, or HM Dowager Queen Mary.
This would have distinguished herself from her daughter-in-law, who was officially HM Elizabeth, Dowager Queen of the United Kingdom, or HM Dowager Queen Elizabeth (neither would have been HM THE Dowager Queen, since there were two dowager queens living, 1952-1953). But the latter could have simply styled herself as HM Queen Elizabeth.
Since the widow of King George V hated both the title Dowager Queen and Queen Mother, having been accustomed for years to being styled as HM The Queen and later HM Queen Mary, it's difficult to imagine the new queen regnant wanting to cause her grandmother discomfort by using the name Mary III for regnal purposes. I was just speculating on the situation, considering that it would have made it easier for her mother.
As it was, it was up to the widow of King George VI to get around the sticky situation of name crowding, and picking her poison when it came to choosing between Dowager Queen and Queen Mother, which she was obliged to, since there never was any real question of whether the new monarch was going to style herself as Elizabeth II, not Mary III.
That she would not use Alexandra was a given: it was not a traditional regnal name, and would have created an awkward situation, with memories of King Edward VII's widow (only a queen consort) still fresh on some people's minds.
Just as it would have been, for the former Princess May of Teck to style herself as queen with the name Victoria, as the consort (later widow) of King George V.
