But also in the old(er) days, this happened on several occasions, lik with the Counts von Carlow who are now Dukes of Mecklenburg (-Strelitz) once more. This was done, I would imagine, because the Schwerin-branch was about to become extinct which has happened a couple of years ago when the last male Duke died. Although he has two daughters who were of course born as Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
Now this made me wonder, has there ever been talk within the Hessen-family to demorganatize the Battenbergs? This could have been done by Prince Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein, the last male scion of the Grandducal family.
Was this deemed unnecesary as there are two Hessen-branches still around with Hessen-Kassel and Hessen-Philippsthal-Brachfeld?
Or was it perhaps the doubtful paternity of Prince Alexander von Hessen und bei Rhein, that prevented the family from being demoragatized?
