The occupation in 1940 and the reintegration into Germany was never recognised by France. The only legacy of this period is that Alsace Lorraine remains subject to the terms of the 1801 Concordat between France and the Holy See, as the 1905 revocation was not enforceable in Alsace-Lorraine, then part of Germany. This means that the strict Church-State separation of 1905 (which coincided with extraordinary persecution of the Church, the forced closure of religious houses and schools) does not prevail in this part of France (now Alsace-Moselle). Hence the Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Jewish faiths are all officially recognized by the state and the ministers in the region receive their salaries from the state.
A unique privilege of the French president remains to nominate the bishop of Metz and (since 1988) archbishop of Strasburg, with the agreement of the Holy See, under whose authority these two Sees remains directly subject rather than being full members of the French conference of bishops. President Hollande, an atheist who refused to enter any part of St Peter's when he visited the Pope and refused to enter the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, but only entered the church hall for the traditional meeting with the French clergy in Rome, remains the only head of state in the world who appoints Catholic bishops.
: I actually like the idea of an independent
: grand-duchy of Lorraine for Max Hohenberg.
: Too bad it never came to fruition.
: Having lived all of her life in Britain I am
: sure Queen Mary didn't let her morganatic
: status feel that she was anything but royal.

: Last month I posted a thread on this subject
: as I had read on PdV that it might have been
: ADss Maria Teresa (née Braganza) the author
: of the plan to create an independent
: grand-duchy of Lorraine for Max Hohenberg,
: and that she had written to the kaiser
: asking his support.
: I am reading Greg King and Sue Wolmans'
: "The Assassination of the
: Archduke" and it seems the idea came
: from Kaiser Wilhelm who presented it to
: Franz Ferdinand when he visited the ADke at
: Konopisteck on the early summer of 1914.
: I am loving the book ... and I loved
: Interesting to read that Q.Mary, herself the
: product of a morganatic marriage, had some
: reserves on Sophie Chotek, reserves that
: were swept away when the two ladies had the
: chance to meet and talk.
