Maxima and Laurentien wore some nice jewels and i get that the younger princesses opted for more delicate options considering their youth.
I wonder if they have started a trend by not wearing hats. I could see a time when the ladies appear in long gowns with the decorations instead of the ribbon and star of their order and no hats.
My ideal would be the men of the Royal House in uniform or white tie with orders and the ladies replacing their hats with tiara's so we get even more to look at during a rather boring speech thet tends to be leaked in advance. Previous Message
Both the King and the Princess of Orange seem to have lost quite some weight in recent months. Whether it is medicine induced or a lifestyle change, both look good. Although I have also noticed a rapid thinning of the Kings hair in the last year or so.
On an entirely different note: I am glad the Mayor of The Hague seems to have gotten things under control once again after the royal disaster last year when Princess Beatrix' view was blocked by a horde of protestors standing in front the Council of State building. An utter disgrace. Yes, protest should be allowed on any day but why in heavens name in front of our former monarch who has served us well. The King has nothing to do with what's decided by 'his' government. Blame the political parties, blame the majority of citizens that voted them in but not our neutral Head of State. For our readers from afar: In West-European monarchies, the monarchs have absolutely NO power. I still hear quite a number of foreign commentators and even politicians, mostly from the US I must admit, suggesting to their audience that our sovereigns have some sort of formal power which they don't. But unfortunately also many ignorant Dutch protestors seem to have skipped their social studies classes and are convinced that targeting our symbolic Head of Sate will make a difference. It doesn't. It only makes one look foolish and ignorant to be frank.
Anyway. It was a lovely day in The Hague but IMHO the royals ladies were a bit too scarcely bejewelled this year. I do hope this is not a new trend. Previous Message
Today was 12th time HM the King read the King's speech in Dutch we call it the speech from the throne.
The new government announced their plans for the next year.
Traditionally there is also quite a lot of pageantry that goes with this event.
Carriages, military escorts and bands. The king and prince Constantijn were like the male members of the cabinet and part of the male members of both chambers of Parliament wore their morning suits. Queen Maxima was in a pale blue Claes Iversen dress with aquamarine jewels. Princess Alexia was wearing a dress worn by her mother in 2002 and princess Laurentien was in a pink gown and the pale pink earrings, brooch with pendant that Maxima wore when Beatrix abdicated.
The star today was the Princess of Orange. Catharina-Amalia seems to have lost some weight and opted for a green gown and gold accessories.
Unlike previous years there were no boo-sounds when the family drove by or was on the balcony and there were more people in the centre of The Hague.
