Indeed. It was a ' public secret' she was spending a lot of time abroad although only among a small group of royal watchers but as you said people wanted her to have a normal as possible life after the security threats here in the NL. Surprisingly also the Spanish tabloids keept quiet. I am guessing Sophia, Filipe and Letizia kept an eye out for her during her stay in Madrid and that they met privately.

Today it has become public knowledge that princess Amalia spent a year in Madrid to escape from the threats against her. She could live and study there as she intended to do in Amsterdam. At this moment HRH has returned to Amsterdam and continued her study there.

The fact that it became public the day before the start of the Spanish State Visit to the Netherlands might mean we will hear some words about it in the speech of King Willem-Alexander for the banquet.
