I was making fun of course. He was an over-privileged, self pleasing and himself over-estimating parvenue pure and simple. I have a feeling Wilhelmina and plenty of courtiers and officials saw through him but didn't have the hart to intervene. Wilhelmina did not have much 'power' over him after 1947 when he really became cocky. But ultimately we have to see him in HIS time, not retro-actively pass too harsh a judgement. He was a product of his time. Until the late 1960''s he pretty much did as he pleased and that even continued after his fall from grace. His surroundings, including the subsequent PM's surely weighed the benefits and drawbacks of Benno on a regular basis but ultimately gave him much leeway because they knew Juliana would not hear of any criticism on 'Pappie'.

These poor people have an exceptional position in a egalitarian society and have to live a life in a glass house with the vultures swarming outside. Every step is scrutinised , every word is caught and publicly weighed. And on top of that we take today's moral codes and retro-actively pass scathing judgements.

Aww, all those poor super-rich, well-connected people running our world so very well and so selflessly - and all the unfair burdens that the ungrateful masses of unworthy citizenry place on them by not blindly trusting them.

As for Bernhard’s philandering, financial corruption and abuse of his position: Have “today's moral codes” even changed much over sixty years? The man is not some medieval prince being harshly evaluated by the moral standards of half a millenium later- he was alive twenty years ago.
