Historically it is nonsense but the actors, costumes and sets are very nice on the eye.
Louis XVI is played by Louis Cunningham. As a grandson of Prince Charles of Luxembourg (brother of Grand Duke Jean) he is of course a direct descendant of Louis XV and a direct descendant of Marie Antoinette's sister, both through the Bourbon-Parma family. .
Cunningham plays the Dauphin / King as a well meaning but shy and sexually naive young man who needs the Emperor Joseph to sort out his marriage and advise him how to make love to Marie Antoinette.
Cunningham has a look of Louis XVI (tall with the Bourbon nose?) but is very slim, whereas I always imagine the King as plump in his youth and fat as he aged.
The programme has mixed reviews, mainly due to its historical inaccuracies but I enjoyed it for the performances , which are often grotesque.
