A few months ago the Queen visited a beautiful seaside town in the Netherlands to promote tourism to the area. Ding ding! What better way for her to do so by spending the family's autumn vacation in one of the many seaside towns in the country!
The King, Queen and princesses flew friday afternoon to Greece in order to spent the autumn break there, although the area they went to is in a yellow zone and as such a place you can travel to without having to go into quarantine upon return the idea of the monarch and his family having a foreign holiday when the nation has gone in a form of lockdown again caused an uproar on social media. As a result the press office released a statement that the royals would return home asap. Meaning that the government plane also used by the Royals first flew with the family to Greece, returned empty and than had to fly out again empty to bring back the King and his family.
Not exactly the best PR for TM.
What was rather more telling is that the weekly press conference was handled by a deputy prime minister as the PM was in Brussels for EU talks and while the PM knew about the planned holiday to Greece his deputy was caught of garde by the journalist asking about the King's travel plans.
Most political parties have responded that they appreciate the king and queen returning after having made an error in judgement. Yet the fact that the PM was aware of it and did not stop them going there and did not inform his stand-in/deputy is something that will end up with another round of questions in Parliament surrounding the monarchy and the political responsibility the PM and other ministers have about the actions and public statements of the monarch.
