His son in turn, Adolf, was not just deposed: he lost his throne and his country when it was annexed by Prussia in 1866.
DEPOSED is an umbrella term for any sovereign who was dethroned for reasons other than death (e.g. King Willem III of the Netherlands) or voluntary abdication (e.g. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands).
This includes forced (or pressured) abdications (e.g. Grand Duchess Marie Adelaide of Luxembourg, King Leopold III of the Belgians), abolition of the monarchy (e.g. King Constantine II of the Hellenes), revolution and overthrow (e.g. Czar Nicholas II of Russia), loss of sovereignty (as you say, through annexation). Other examples of the latter would be the Italian duchies of Parma and Modena, as well as the kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
