Re: Luxembourg and language
Exactly. Everyone in Luxembourg going to school there are taught in Letzebuergish, French, German and later also English.
So they all speak multiple languages no matter what the main language is at home.
Okay, so if you had been born in Luxembourg with parents speaking Letsebuergish, it's not unlikely that your parents would have named you Jean?
The two main languages in the country are the native Letzebuergish and French. Though Letzebuergish might sound very Germanic it is a mixture and French names are very common in Luxembourg. Of course English and other language variations on names have become more popular over the years the French versions of names have remained popular also in the normal population.
In Groussherzogtum Lėtzebuerg, the reigning family obviously prefer French. The newborn Prince is called Charles, not Karl, and his father is Guillaume, not Wilhelm et cetera. What is the reason for this?
