As opinions can change from government to government the Dutch royals have learned only to express the most widely accepted point of view. Willem-Alexander did so in this particular press meeting. Yes he added some personal things to it about some airports and his own preferences of British humour but the fact that the Dutch nation feels sad about the UK leaving Europe and fear the economical repercussions it will have on both nations has been the point of view of the vast majority in the Dutch Parliament since the Brexit referendum.
That the Netherlands will stick to the negotiations by the EU and not try anything separate is also perfectly in line with official policy.
It would be very odd if he paid a State Visit to the UK and would not mention the Brexit at all.
Personally I think it's fine that the king spoke out about this matter, but others might disagree, the king not really having a political role anymore.
Having read the gruelling programme of this state visit, I wonder why it couldn't be done in three days, as usual….
It has been condemned by experts and divided the country. Now Brexit has been officially given the royal seal of disapproval – albeit by the Dutch monarch from his palace in The Hague.
Ahead of the first state visit by a Dutch royal to the UK in almost 40 years, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has told of his regret and fears over Britain’s decision to leave the EU.
It might not be an intervention that will convince leave voters that Brussels is not a project of the elite for the elite, but the King, speaking to British journalists at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague, said he expected to see an impact on trade between the two nations.
