One is that it came from the birthday of stadholder Willem V who was 4 years old when he succeeded his father as hereditary stadholder. His birthday was celebrated. When his son Willem Frederik became King Willem I he had the opening of parliament in november and the day was called prinsjesdag. Possibly because the king was only accompanied by his sons the Prince of Orange and prince Frederik of the Netherlands. When the sons of the prince of Orange were old enough they also attended. Throughout the 19th century the Dutch monarch was always in the company of princes of the Royal House, the queens-consort and princesses did not attend.
That may have been another reason why the day is named for the princes.

: Why do Dutch keep calling it Prinsjesdag ?
:
: Just respect for tradition ?
:
: I know it was meant in honour of Prince
: Wilhem V but it has no direct relation to
: him (birthdate, death date).
:
: Why not King's day ?
