without the dialect, the books wouldn't even work. that's a critical part of her storytelling and the characters themselves. if you met them in real life, you'd need to work at understanding them also (assuming you speak a different dialect). but if they, as real people, told stories in Standard American Broadcast English, they would be easily understood, jsut like connie chung. but part would be lost.
to me, it isn't worth it...
like watching a DVD with the volume turned down. you might like the movie anyway, but you're better off just finding the remote and turning the volume up.
