Hurston was afraid of commitment. Afraid of belonging to a man. This is a major theme of Their Eyes Were Watching God. She sees relationships with men as dangerous. At the end, the main character is alone. Because she is the one person she can fully trust.
This is happy and sad at the same time. Everyone needs to trust themselves, but if you fear other people, you will end up lonely.
Hurston was afraid of other things, but many of them are related to the idea of losing control over your own life. You will see this in almost all of her stories.
