No, I wasn't there. I was in Vietnam. Being in college or the National Guard was the place to be to avoid the military. Thats why they had waiting list to get into the Guard.
I got mixed emotions on this subject. I feel the students had the right to protest. But I also feel that their protesting caused the war to last longer and end as it did.
I remember that when the Kent State incident happened and we heard about it in Vietnam we couldn't help but find some humor in it. Here's two groups of people who wanted to avoid war and their fighting and killing each other at home.
Man, those were some "heavy" times for this country.
But one thing is for sure. There were no lessons learned from that war. Here we are 30 years later making the same mistakes. Letting the news people bring the ugly side of war into the living rooms of America every night. Bogged down in another country's civil war. People protesting in the streets and feeding the enemy fuel for their propaganda machine. Seems like the only change is who the warrior's are. This time the National Guard wasn't a safe haven for avoiding the war.
