Posted by shadow on 11/18/2006, 9:48 am I attended the Veterans Day ceremonies at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building in Fayetteville last Saturday night. The speakers and military band and service were wonderful and I wish to thank all who participated. Although the turnout was fair, I am in fact dismayed that more failed to show up. Yes, it was cold and raining, but what about our servicemen and women who are out in all kinds of weather doing their jobs? Is it apathy? Is it laziness? Or just let the other guy do it mentality? I really don’t understand it and am ashamed that so many fail to support such things. I was asked once, what’s it to you? Why is it your business? Because it’s my flag, my country, my freedom and I need to support and show my respect to those who have served and do serve, and those who have paid the ultimate price so that I have the opportunity to live as we do in the greatest country in the world. What if George Washington’s men said, “Well, it’s too cold, I’m too hungry, this isn’t my business. I’m going home.” Where would we be today? Freedom is never free. It’s everyone’s business and when you don’t exercise your freedom and use it daily, it wastes away and others will take it from you. You cannot be a Monday morning quarterback and second guess and gripe when things don’t go the way you think they should if you don’t get involved. While you are sitting in your nice warm living room flipping through the channels, think about those who are in harm’s way, doing their best to protect our freedom. And then, the next time you see a vet, go up to them and thank them for what they have done for us all. Never forget!
