After a sparkling Tuesday night in which he'd climbed from 18th to first in 80 laps around the tricky Slinger Speedway, Bennett had just won his fourth to match Dick Trickle and the late Joe Shear. "OK," he said. "We got one more to go yet. "That's an honor to be in that crowd, and it couldn't be much better." Bennett barely broke a sweat in a race in which just nine of the 24 starters finished, adding a victory to those he'd earned in 1997, 2000 and 2004. "So many times I've come from behind or had to make it through a qualifier and march my way all the way to the front, but I think sometimes it makes me a better racer," said Bennett, who made the field by winning a last-chance race. Jeremy Lepak chased Bennett down for a time before wearing his right rear tire down. He finished nearly 5 seconds behind. Brad Mueller took third. "Lowell's car was so stout," said Mueller, a longtime rival. "When I saw him in the top five in the first 75 laps, I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me.' He was going to win this thing." Meanwhile, the stars whose presence helped pack the place disappeared early. Three-time and defending Nationals champion Matt Kenseth, the 2003 Winston Cup champion from Cambridge, lasted 33 laps before succumbing to a failure in the oil tank.
