Just because you are breeding 2 different breeds and making a mutt doesn't mean they won't have health issues. I used to work at a clinic and there were more mixed breeds with health issues like EPI, OCD, HD and others then pure breeds. The reason most believe that mixes don't have these issues is because they aren't treated like pure breed dogs that people paid a fortune for. I was told I don't know how many times after the vet gave the results to the testing we had performed and the fact that these dogs would need regular medication and monitoring at the clinic to just put it down it was only a mutt and they could get another. Breeders who are responsible test their stock...does that mean that the occasional dog doesn't develop HD or EPI? No what it means is that ETHICAL breeder remove these dogs from their program. Check with PennHip, OFA or OVC and see how fewer case of HD are then when breeders initially started breeding. Tell me how many dogs that are mixes were tested so you could base the facts for hips on them as an example. When you purchase a purebreed dog it is usually because you are/were looking for a particular trait. Rotti for guarding/working, border collie/collie for hearding, etc. these drives (traits) are more pronounced in purebreeds instead of being diluted in mixes. I don't think that makes mixes any less of the dogs but you are even less certain of which traits are going to appear in mixes as you don't know fron which gene pool they will pull from and when mixes breed to mixes then you are really in for a guessing game. I also grew up with mutts and purebreeds alike and if my reasoning was just based on my experience my pure breeds did just as well as the mixes and lived just as long. The pure breds were purchased with a purpose in mind and the mixes were just there. My issue isn't with ethical breeders...it is with the BYB breeders that are pumping out crap to pet stores and people that are unaware of what they are buying but the puppy looked so cute until it grew and then it's guarding instinict came out and they just couldn't deal and it ends up in rescue or in a shelter. Are you going to take back every puppy you breed if the person you sold it to can't deal with it anymore or it isn't cute or cuddly anymore. Are you going to offer a health guarentee for these puppies? As for horse breeders...when you just want something to ride then it doesn't matter the lineage but call the big name stables and ask them if they would breed a Quarter Horse to their Thourghbred to open up the gene pool. Do I think you are benefiting the breed...ahhh NO! Try and rationalize any way you can to make it sound like you are better then BYB because you saw a mix that looked neat. But it doesn't change the facts.
