Hello Everyone, I am new to this message board and am probably going to get some flack for this question. So please don't make a snap judgement about it before reading my post! I have a female corso who is almost 3 years old. She is an absolutely gorgeous black corso, I received her when she was just over a year old. I would like to breed her(pending hip cert.). I am wondering what test there is to determine if they are epi carriers, and if my vet is able to do it?
Now here is the part I may receive flack about, but I have my reasons. I would like to breed her to a great dane. There I said it
Anyways, I have researched both breeds extensively, their health issues, temperments, and the pros and cons of each.(I was also a proud dane owner for 10 years) Now, this has all come up after I saw a pair(full sisters)of dane/corso mixes about 8 months ago.
Both girls were black, and absolutely stunning girls! They strongly resembled a corso, being somewhat taller and lighter in build. At this point after reading about all of these corsos with forged papers, forged hip cert. papers, epileptic and dysplatic dogs, I absolutely would not breed my dog to another corso (as much as I adore the breed).
So, before anyone can say, how are you bettering the breed by doing this. I can say, if one can produce an absolutely wonderful, beautiful companion dog for families (which people with purebreds do all the time! Some breeders do not offer show quality puppies, but simply pet quality pups that must be spayed/neutered), with a significant decrease in health problems (this isn't really a point of debate, as 'mutts' are much much less likely to inherit any genetic and physical abnormalities that are inherent in any breed)then is it such a bad thing? I have no doubts about finding the puppies homes. I do plan on keeping one back from the litter, and the owner of the dane (I have already found a suitable dog, he is OVC certified and is 4) would like to keep one as well.
I am not doing this to make some quick cash (obviously if I wanted to do this I would breed my girl to another corso!), I truly believe that these dogs would be wonderful companions. Many dogs today have histories which include one or more breeds that was introduced to improve upon certain qualities in another breed.
Anyways, I just thought I would mention my idea.
I am interested to hear what you guys think? I realize that posting this question on a forum that is dedicated to a certain breed will likely generate only negative responses. But I ask you, to really think about the idea before writing a reply, perhaps look at some other forums, the Cane Corso BBB, (or even some of the threads on here that pertain to bad breeders using sick dogs to make a quick profit) before passing judgement.
Anyways I realize this post is quite long, hopefully some will make it through it! I hope to hear some thoughtful responses. I absolutely love my corso and offer my condolences to all of those who have had misfortune with them.
