I have read many of the postings on this site, regarding welfare recipients owning canes. My husband and I in July 2007 were looking for another dog (after having to put our RottX down the previous year due to old age). We were actually looking for a rottweiler when a lady responded to our posting advising she had an italian mastiff. Having always thought I would like a mastiff, we called them up and went to view the dog. We were advised that he was a Cane. We walked into their house, I sat on the floor, waiting for Triton to make his move to me. He slowly progressed across the floor and landed in my lap. After 40 mins of talking to him and telling him exactly just how spoiled and pampered he would be, we asked him if he would like to go for a ride. I have never seen a dog bolt as quickly as he did for the door. We took him to the vet the next day and were advised that he was quite a bit underweight. You could see his hips and spine as well as all his ribs. That I believe was the result of what happens when you can't actually afford your animals. Needless to say, he has been with us since mid July 2007, he's put on about 25 lbs. We buy good quality food as well as good quality treats. I believe that we saved his life. He is the best dog in the world, the most loyal and the most childish at times! We have truly fallen in love with the bred. We live in Langley, BC and are looking to purchase a female to keep him company. Apparently at his other home, they had a Neopolitan and he was far too aggressive with Triton. He is very socialized with other dogs and as we have quite a few friends with dogs, he gets along well with all of them. Does anyone know of a good breeder in BC?
