Posted by Andrew I very much appreciate the reply. The email I sent was a post I made on a Cane Corso bulletin board I frequent. Someone had posted that Best Friends was having a "Dangerous dog breed summit" or something along those lines, and that your organization's intent was to support breed specific bans. I think we all know it's a problem of poorly educated, uncaring and irresponsible dog breeders and owners than a problem with the breeds themselves. I own two Cane Corso Italian Mastiffs and wouldn't give them up for the world. A dog is what you put into it, and I put a lot of effort into raising my dogs. It's a lack of laws governing the behaviour of breeders and the homes they allow their dogs to reside in that causes the problems. A child who's raised in a crack house is much more likely to be a criminal, so when looking at a breed like pitbulls whom are wonderful dogs but attract less than desirable owners, why not apply the same logic, that a dog raised in a poor environment is much more likely to behave dangerously than a dog raised in a positive environment. This poor environment even extends to good families who don't know the importance of training and obedience. I've met many more weiner dogs, lhaso apso's and other assorted lap-dogs, in what many would consider good homes, that have much greater aggresive tendencies than my 130pd Cane Corso. However a weiner dog attack gets little media attention, as opposed to a pitbull or rottweiler attack. Clearly the larger animals have the potential to inflict greater damage, but they are not necessarily more aggressive than any other breed. There's too many angles to debate this topic on than I can begin to touch on, but I can't see one angle that supports punishing the whole for the actions of a few. If a person of middle eastern origin carries out an act of terrorism, it is not fair to label all middle eastern people terrorists. A few attacks from large dogs that get overwhelming media attention can't be justification to label an entire breed dangerous. Much more media attention should be placed on where that dog came from and who was responsible for the dog. There's even the point that a dog carries the intelligence and problem solving abilities of a 3 year old child. Would we expect a 3 year old to take responsibility for their actions, and face severe punishment. Most people would look to the parents as the responsible force behind their childs actions, not the child. I digrese, Sincerely, Andrew Mailman
