Posted by Andrew Dear Andrew, Thanks for being in touch about the gross distortion of the truth about Best Friends and Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) that is being propagated primarily by one Web site and its author. Let me state unequivocally: Best Friends is completely opposed to BSL. No ifs, ands, or buts. Any other representation of our position is untruthful and deliberately misleading. You should strongly question the motives and agenda of any person who suggests otherwise. This past weekend, Best Friends held a highly successful Summit on BSL. Specific daily reports on this Summit can be found at http://network.bestfriends.org. Dozens of people from across the country – including Denver and Colorado – have shared the anguish and impact of BSL – and BSL “creep” in their communities, cities, and states. We have heard from people who provided shelter to pit-bulls as they were smuggled out of Denver to safety. We have heard from people who are scared that the next knock on their door will local authorities coming for their dog because it has been banned. We have heard from lawyers who have worked to overturn BSL in their city or state. We heard from Rep. Debbie Stafford of Colorado, who spoke passionately of her work to have the state legislature and the courts rule Denver’s BSL illegal. This Summit was designed for us to hear, firsthand, the devastating impact of BSL on dozens of communities around the country. Best Friends is wholly committed to challenging and fighting BSL, and to providing specific resources – including legal, financial and communications – to those who are on the front-lines of this effort. More on this coordinated effort will emerge over the coming days and next few weeks. Let me assure you, Best Friends is not interested in eliminating any breed of dog. Let me assure you Best Friends is NOT dumping pit-bulls to make way for the animals we recently brought to safety from war-torn Lebanon. If the author of that untruth had cared to check their facts, they would quickly have learned that a completely different section of our sanctuary has been developed to house those animals – one previously unused for other purposes. I encourage you to read the articles on our web site, which do provide a clear and concise summary of our goals and objectives. I have provided two links that will take you directly to the site. There are other articles as well. http://network.bestfriends.org/dangerousdogs http://network.bestfriends.org/dangerousdogs/news/7330.html We will be taping the Summit, and then offering a DVD of the proceedings shortly thereafter. Additionally, we plan to have a writer there who will be reporting on each day’s proceedings and posting her reports to the Best Friends Network. While this will not be a specific transcript of the event, it will provide a good, regular update. I hope this helps answer any concern you may have about our position. Please do not hesitate to be in touch if you have further questions.
