Posted by Andrew There's another moral issue here. At one time every breed was bred for a purpose. We as humans played god, manipulated genes, and developed a breed with a purpose in mind. Now that times have changed and the dog exists but the purpose no longer does, is it morally right to just discard these breeds? We created them, used them, they faithfully worked for us, and now once their use is done, we decide they are dangerous and should be killed. Kind of like training the soldier, sending him to war, and when the wars done forgetting him. How many veterans are suffering from Gulf war syndrome that the government fails to give a shit about? Seems when humans run out of use for something, if it's still around, it becomes a real nuisance to us. Thirdly, this is very much a political, and for that matter a religious debate. Its the do-gooders (generally supported by their religious values) who feel that their values are the right values, and everyone should follow their values, that continually impose their will on others who do not want their will imposed on them. It's government trying to play big brother, protecting us from ourselves by stripping us of our freedoms. I could name a thousand examples, drug laws, prostitution, most recently terrorism. The irony is that in order to protect our freedoms and ourselves, the government decides to take freedoms away. If allowed, this will become another prime example of the Government supposedly protecting us (from so called aggressive dog breeds) by taking away our right to own these breeds. We have the right to own Working breeds of dogs same as we have the right to own guns, neither are dangerous unless in the wrong hands, the Government, or Best Friends Animal Society, dictating to me what would be in my best interest. Is it in a pot smoker’s best interest to smoke pot? Probably not, but the alternative, protecting the pot head from himself by stripping him of his reputation, his belongings, and putting him in jail, makes no bloody sense! It's these goddamn religious moralists and busybodies trying to push what they believe to be right and wrong on the rest of us. If I want to have a large, working breed dog, so long as my dog does not injure the person or property of others, I have the right to have whatever dog I choose!

This sounds to me, in a nut-shell, the same arguement that's been waging forever regarding firearms. The fact of the matter is, guns don't kill people, people kill people. Take the most dangerous, fully automatic military issue gun and stare at it for as long as you like, it's not dangerous until you pick it up, load it and pull the trigger. It's not a breed’s fault, or an individual dogs fault, but irresponsible breeders selling to irresponsible owners, who do not provide the right environment for their dog. Leave that same rifle unattended in a home full of children, and an accident may happen, it's not the right environment for a gun.
