Thanks everyone for the responses. No, this isn't canine acne(unfortunately) they are indeed cysts or tumors. trichopheliomas are benign and often reocurring, but one was a mast cell tumor- in other words cancerous. They got all the margins last time with a second surgery(after it came back malignant) so we were hoping that would be the last of that. all these lumps have been very small, this one is smaller than a pea, and if she were another breed, like a chow I am sure we would never have found them at all. The books say that trichopheliomas are common in young dogs and since they are benign, they are nothing to worry about. the problem is that you have to take it out to find out what it is and that requires surgery. I hate putting her under.
soooo, now she has to go in yet again ![]()
This time we are going to be getting her spayed as well. We had really hoped to breed her one day, but after all these surgeries it seems rediculous. It is really a shame too, she is OFA good and has the best temperament, fearless protector and a sweetheart with family.
Since I really can't figure out why she is getting these, and if it is in fact a genetic predisposition, I think this is the best decision. Besides, I dont want to put any extra strain on her system, I just want her to be healthy.
To answer your questions, no, she doesn't seem to be bothered by them at all, and our vet says that mast cell tumors 'can' be genetic but they can also appear for no reason at all. the other kind, they really have no idea why. genetic anomoly? its my best guess.
we feed her Medi Cal from the vet, we used to feed holistic blends but switched after the first lumps appeared, thinking maybe it was diet.
Thanks again, I will keep you guys posted as to what this turns out to be, if anyone else outthere has dealt with this feel free to give me your advice.
Thanks,
Lexie
