There is a lot of history attached to the marriage between William Wills and Jane Horn. William Wills was a basket maker in Dover, Kent. Many years ago I was researching a person named Korah Halcombe Wills and have only just twigged that he was one of the 13 children of the above.
First of all Maximillian Wills one of the brothers of Korah Wills married Louisa Cleverley in Bendigo in 1858 as you mentioned. She was born in Wiltshire in England about 1838. Many from her family came to Australia and settled in Clarence, Tasmania and today are scattered all around Tassie and here in Victoria.
Korah Halcombe Wills was born 27th Feb 1828 at Dover, Kent, England along with all other brothers and sisters. Korah married Louisa Hunter in Dover, Kent just before emigrating to Australia. his first child Georgiana was born in Adelaide in 1851. Soon after that they moved to Victoria.
Maximillian Wills at this time was already living in Victoria running his own business of some sort.
Korah went into partnership with Maximillian for a short time before they had a "falling out"
Korah Wills then moved to Bowen in Northern Queensland and was a Hotel Keeper and was publican of the Victoria Hotel, Bowen in 1864.
In 1870 he moved to Mackay and bought the royal Hotel and changed the name immediately to the "WILLS HOTEL"
Korah Wills was Mayor of Mackay for two terms, 1876 and 1877. By this time he was very wealthy and purchased several bocks of land.
Korah and his wife Louisa and several of his children returned to england in the 1880s settling just outside London. Also moving to live close to Korah were other notable wealthy businessmen by the name of Harold Finch-Hatton, the Rawson brothers and Alfred Hewitt all property developers. All became ardent members of the Queensland Club in London when at the time they held an annual "Queensland Dinner"
Korah died in Brentford,Middlesex, London in 1896 with his name on the headstone with his nephew William Elgar Marsh and his sister Georgiana Caroline Amelia Marsh.
With regards to your question of which family tree line this Wills family connect to I should have an answer within a few months as I believe that your William Wills born in 1778 had uncles living in Cornwall in the late 1600s.That branch of Wills's had rellies in Devon which I should be able to track down.
One of the descendants of a John Wills born in 1828 in Madron, Cornwall came out to Ballarat in the 1850s. I will let you know my findings on your Wills family line.
