I am no expert on American trees but reading a book about Lewisias by B. LeRoy Davidson I found that Mahonia [really a shrub] was named for Bernard McMahon The American Horticulturalist who was a main influence at the time of the Lewis, Clark Expedition of 1804. Quite a few plants were discovered around that time which gave rise to a host of new names such as Clarkia, jeffersonia and of course Lewisia named in honour of Captain Meriwether Lewis.
